This Isn’t Real

For us omnivores, nothing smells as tantalizing as a juicy steak cooking on the grill. The smell of meat wafting up through the rack and the sound of dripping fat sizzling as it hits the coals can make us drool in sensory anticipation. Turns out you can have the same experience without actually eating meat from a cow.

Bloomberg Technology reported that Impossible Foods, a California company, “has been developing a hamburger patty that is closer to beef than any other simulation, yet has never come near a cow. They’ve even figured out a way to synthesize blood so as to give burgers their characteristic juiciness.” I can just hear Trish tapping on that glass in Divergent as she whispers,”This isn’t real.”

I don’t know about you, but the thought of a tempting burger made in a lab seems utterly, totally, wrong. Of course, Big Business touts in-vitro meat as a sustainable answer to industrial produced meat, but that is just not going to sway me. Surely humankind would be better served by finding a more sustainable farming method rather than creating frankenfood for the masses.

The desire to eat meat is an ancient one: “The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘Tell the Israelites: These are the animals you can eat: If an animal has hooves that are split into two parts, and if that animal also chews the cud, then you may eat the meat from that animal.’” (Leviticus 11:1-3)

A moment of silence and Amen!

Although numerous scriptures address sacrificial burnt offerings and they certainly do carry a spiritual significance, it is clear that the aroma of cooking meat is pleasing to the Lord. “The LORD smelled the soothing aroma; and the LORD said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.” (Gen. 8:1)

Synthetic meat holds no more appeal to me than the genetically modified fruits and vegetables being pushed on cancer-stricken Americans. God certainly knew the future before we did, and He cuts right through the science to tell us what we should eat. “And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.’” (Gen. 1:29).

Synthetic meat, cultured meat, or in-vitro meat is the manufacturing of meat outside of the animal. The idea is to produce animal meat without the animal. Using this method, starter cells are taken from live animals and put into a culture to grow. The argument for this method is that it is sustainable and is not genetically manipulated in the classic sense.

And the rich just can’t wait to make a bundle from this “manufacturing” method. PayPal founder, Peter Thiel, seeded $350,000 into a company called Modern Meadow  as early as 2012. Four years later, I wanted to see what they were up to but I was unable to view their programs on their website without contacting them. Beyond Meat, a company backed by Bill Gates, the premier New World Order proponent, is also in the fray to produce in-vitro meat. On his blog, Gates touts his usual rhetoric of a burgeoning world population and wrings his hands over how will we ever feed so many people. His view is that it is just simply unsustainable to continue to use more land and resources for growing our farm animals.

And all of this sounds so reasonable, doesn’t it? Who can argue with wanting to save our natural resources. But I am a skeptic for this type of talk. There is no reason that enough livestock can’t be raised by Americans willing and able to work the land, minimally process goods, and distribute them to their local communities. No, the real problem is that the Gates of this world can’t make money off of decentralized farming. And greedy local communities always seeking to land grab and regulate free trade of any type don’t stand to grow if they are not swallowing up outlying acreage for tax purposes. The truth is that unregulated free trade of agricultural goods is a threat to the rich and to those who seek to regulate the masses. Food control is one of the oldest methods of controlling a population.

Venezuela is a prime example of a people beholden to their government for the supply of their food. And those in the know will seek whatever means available to foist this un-Holy food on a starving population. Cue those smart preppers! So as this fourth of July rolls around, this girl is going to enjoy her real burgers on a grill with Mom’s real apple pie while the iron is still hot. Bon appétit!
