There’s a New Sheriff in Town and He May Be Your Last Defense

Maryland Sheriff Mike Lewis says to expect civil war if the Feds come for your guns. “As long as I’m the sheriff in this county, I will not allow the federal government to come in here and strip my citizens of their right to bear arms. I can tell you this, if they attempt to do that, it would be an all-out civil war, no question about it.”

Rural law enforcement officers are emerging as the last line of defense in the fight against Democratic “red flag” laws—even in deep blue states.

These “new” sheriffs in town have become our last defense when local legislatures violate Constitutional law, passing bills that allow family and household members or law enforcement to petition a judge to remove firearms from someone who is deemed a danger to themselves or others.

By refusing to enforce these red flag laws and publicly drawing attention to the overreach, a few good men are fighting back—and winning.

In rural Maryland, Sheriff Lewis of Wicomico County made headlines when he refused to enforce new gun regulations proposed in the Maryland General Assembly, saying “We will not comply.”

Maryland has proven to be a hot bed of gun grabbing legislation. One bill currently before the Assembly would criminalize the possession of “heavy barrel” assault rifles that have already been legally purchased under an exemption to a previous Maryland law restricting certain “assault-style” rifles.

Another bill, proposed after the 2018 shooting at the Annapolis Capital Gazette, would require training, state-level background checks and state licensing for all gun purchases, including shotguns and rifles used mostly for hunting. Currently, the restrictions only apply to handguns and the state list of semi-automatic assault rifles.

According to sheriffs from three Maryland counties, HB 786 is a “suicide mission” for law enforcement. Blue Lives Matter told the Maryland assembly that taking guns away from citizens would cause citizens to shoot at officers, and the laws were unconstitutional so they will not comply.

In California, almost half of the sheriffs in the state are rebelling against the new sanctuary law that bars them from assisting ICE in locating illegal aliens.

The Washington Examiner reported on an Oxford University study of the California’s Value Act, which found that 24 out of 58 sheriffs departments, or 41 percent, are using a legal loophole to publish the whereabouts and release dates of criminal illegal immigrants wanted by ICE.

Dan Cadman, a former INS/ICE vet with 30 years of experience said in a report for the Center for Immigration Studies, “Many individuals have been needlessly injured or murdered by aliens released to the street by misguided enforcement organizations in the state. Some of the circumstances involved have been brutal and horrific. Sadly, a number of those slain by illegal aliens released to the streets have been police officers and sheriff’s deputies.”

In Colorado, Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams is pushing back on red flag Bill 19-1177, saying he would go to jail rather than enforce it. Sheriff Reams told CNN this is “a matter of doing what’s right.” Seven other Colorado counties are also pushing back against red flag laws.  After the gun confiscation bill passed the Colorado House, the counties of Custer, Fremont, Kiowa, Montezuma, Otero, Weld, Moffat and Rio Blanco passed resolutions to become “2nd Amendment sanctuaries.”

Big League Politics reported Sheriff Reams as saying, “I have a duty for public safety but also have a duty to protect the Constitution.”

And fighting back works. On March 6, the Weld County Commission unanimously passed a resolution that backed Reams, allowing law enforcement officers not to comply with state gun laws that the commission and law enforcement deem “unconstitutional.”

Fremont and Custer Counties passed similar resolutions.  Weld County Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer agrees wholeheartedly with Sheriff Reams. “The severity of this bill cannot be overstated. The name of this bill is the Extreme Risk Protection Orders. I think that’s a façade, and I think it’s fraudulent. I think actually, this bill should have been titled: ‘The Extreme Order to Confiscate Your Firearms, Eliminate Due Process, and Violate your Constitutional Rights Bill.'”

Officers take an oath to serve and protect, and it is good for Americans to know just how serious officers take this sacred duty.

Democrat policies are endangering the lives of Americans by undermining ICE officers and legislating local law enforcement to participate in illegal gun grabbing.

Immigration laws such as catch and release and sanctuary cities have created a new Wild West in border states as rural and small police departments struggle with progressive local lawmakers’ relentless push for gun confiscation. The good news? It only takes a few good men to fight back. #Reignwell
